So yesterdays hike brought up this topic as we sampled the berries(black huckles were delicious, reds and blueberries were not ready yet)...
Can a person sustain themselves eating just these berries this time of year?
After a little googling we figured there's about 1/4th of a food calorie per berry, meaning one would have to eat about 10,000 berries per day. Seems doable. Figure 1/4th food calorie per berry is reasonable?

We need a time machine. This is a question for people who lived here 500 years ago.

You'd need way more than that to get enough protein and fat.

A 400-lb bear can fatten up for the winter. I wonder how many they can eat in a day?

How are the berries looking this year? I was hiking by Snoqualmie pass and there weren't any that I could see.

I ate a few handfulls last weekend near Leavenworth. I had to restrain myself so the bears would still have something to eat.

I know off a seekrit spot up there that is typically loaded. It’s an off trail route near the old trail north that bypasses the long switchbacks.

Just watch the show " Alone ". It will shed some light on this. Yeah, you'll need more than berries I believe!

According to google, blueberries would give 30ish g of protein, if you ate enough to get all your calories. Not good, but better than nothing. Figure huckles are similar.
I bet it can be done. It works for bears.

We found a few ripe patches on Lost Creek Ridge last weekend. And many many unripe ones. so they're on their way.

If you've ever been lucky/unlucky enough to observe a bear consuming huckleberries, you understand that they are taking in a lot more than just the berries, but also many leaves and insects.
Unlike humans with their opposable thumbs and fastidious tastes bears claw the entire contents of berry branches into their maw.
Insects are a significant component of the bear diet.
