Pretty clear an idiot started that one. There has not been any lightning in quite awhile. I hope the NPS goes back and checks hiking permits and checks with the Lake Chelan Ferry to see who has been let off in that area. Penalties should include huge fines and full restitution - essentially bankruptcy.

Not so fast there. It could be lightning. A lightning strike can stay hidden and smolder for some time--weeks and then pop up into flames. It happens.
On another note, one that isn't making the news, Conconully made it through the night. Crews did a burnout between the fire and the town. Sounds like it was a very long night.
What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

In 1985 four recent Harvard Medical School graduates started a fire near Lake Chelan by burning their toilet paper.
The the time a Forest Service rep said they "might be issued a citation and forced to pay the cost of fighting the blaze." We don't know if the Forest Service considered the potential income of a Harvard Med graduate and tried to collect.

Are there any trails in the area where the fire is located?

Roads, trails, houses, farms.
I feel like that place burns every few years though - we've certainly had several "25 mile creek" fires before, although maybe they were higher up the valley.

Absolutely they paid - Big time! They were billed, case went to court and they were found liable. Damages were.in the $ 1/2 million++ range, I recall.
I spent a couple days on that fire. My old boss (RIP Terry) was flying ‘air attack’ on the fire. He spent a day in Court being grilled by defense as to why he had ordered so many loads of aerial retardent. (then, as now, one of the most expensive single costs in fires).

It seems to me, almost every year, that there should be nothing left to burn in the Chelan area. But the fires keep finding places to burn and reburn. The same goes for the Entiat area.

Per Caltopo appears to be burning in the very last segment of the west shore that hasn't burnt in the last 20 years.

True, and unfortunately given the trend of the last several years, going forward, summertime does not promise anything better.

Found out by a friend who has a house in that area. Fire was started by gunfire. The person(s) are being dealt with.

I hope appropriately: $$$ and perhaps jail time, and not just "a stern talking to".
Just goes to show that Ron White is correct: "you just can't fix stupid".
This brings up a question I've wondered about: how might one find the source for many (any?) of these fires? I've not noticed much TSTM activity in the areas where there are fires, so what was the source of ignition?

I edited the map at the start of this thread so it shows the fire perimeter.
If (1) there is an overnight infrared flight and (2) I do some work, then the map will show that newer perimeter.
