I am not sure why some continue to speculate. The couple tried to send a text message: 11:56 a.m. Aug. 15: "[Name redacted] can you help us. On savage lundy trail heading back to Hites cove trail. No water [over] heating with baby.” Additionally from the LA Times article: "In October, Sheriff Jeremy Briese revealed that an investigation found the family and their dog had died of heat-related illness and probable dehydration."
They died from heat exposure. It really is as simple as that.

I was just going off on a tangent about salt deficiency and my experience with it because someone brought it up. I was not suggesting that the Hites Cove hikers died of anything other than heat exhaustion.
