My laptop and desktop crashed some years ago and have lost links/access to free topo maps with trails that can be loaded into my Garmin GPS.
Can anyone please recommend sites that offer free maps?

I *think* that GPS depot (.com?) has what you may be asking about.

I use Garmin BaseCamp for viewing maps and tracklogs (and installing them on devices). BaseCamp is ugly, but it's still the only application that lets me scroll and zoom around smoothly on detailed maps with lots of tracklogs, even on a large screen...
For maps, I use the increasingly outdated maps from Switchbacks.com mentioned above, plus this distribution of OpenStreetMap (updated once or twice a year): http://www.gmaptool.eu/en/content/usa-pacific-osm-topo-routable
