I was never a huge fan of the Stones, but they're such icons of the era that I had to spend some time reading about him.  Had no idea he was so well regarded, being so less flamboyant than other rock drummers.  Kind of ironic that he was the first to go (if you don't count Brian Jones), considering that he pretty much kept himself apart from the Stones' SOP debauchery.   A good retrospective here.

I have never been a huge fan either (more into different genres) but recently discovered their album, "Blue Lonesome", and I like it a lot...and I have the original Some Girls record album in near perfect condition. Imo, they are the best (or at least my fav) blues-rock band of all time. Their longevity is an amazing feat in itself.

I like this write-up by a local guy: https://www.thestranger.com/slog/2021/08/25/60747823/the-beat-goes-off-rip-rolling-stones-mvp-charlie-watts. The writer is a bit pretentious, but he knows his stuff. So many of the songs he mentions had me going "Yeah, Yeah, Definitely". Great drumming, without trying to show off (in a band that was full of showoffs  smile.gif ). Truly one of the greats -- sorry to see him go.

^^^ "Showoffs", yeah.  I like this video of "Start Me Up"; the cutaways show Watts just amused by his bandmates' antics.   Today I stumbled on this rare interview of him, on the release of his Quintet's album, "Warm & Tender".  I had no idea of this side of his career; will have to check it out.
