Enjoyable walk through the old growth on the now well-beaten path. Life was made easier by being able to draft behind two motivated kids. The youngest got tangled with classic MFK devil's club on two different occasions - important life lessons there. My last visit was 20 years ago when the area was a bit more wild, so seeing 3 other parties on the way up was a different experience. The George Lewis plaque is getting tougher to read, but nice to see it again. The kids helped me clean the entire route of flags on the way down, so it's looking pretty good once more.

Wonderful to see the kids out Randy.  Great hike.

Great to see a post from you Randy. You will only regret not taking the kids out more often!

Did this over the weekend and while the trail is no joke, loved the variety of mushrooms along the way.

Cool orange fungus. Looks like the kids had a grand adventure.

Great photos and kudos to your kids for getting that hike in. I still wish the trail was routed better at the end to avoid that drop to the outlet.

Thanks for taking the flags down. I didn't notice them June 2020 so someone must have put them up since then.

I've wondered if there's something that would restore the plaque. This photo was from December 2018 and it's obvious someone brought up a cleaning agent but that just left big streaks all over the plaque as it oxidized.

BTW, I was having trouble reading the plaque, but Brian Curtis provided the original text:

This Plaque
Has Been Placed Here
By the Trailblazers
In Memory of
George Lewis
1920-1989

George Lewis gave people who enjoy mountain lake fishing tens of thousands of opportunities to catch trout. During his 35 years as a Trailblazer he was responsible for stocking over 100,000 fry in dozens of mountain lakes.

Among the many lakes he took care of were Nine Hour, Buried Hatchet (Little Rainy), and Rainy. These three were among his favorites.

George stocked many trout, and caught many trout; however, he removed very few from their watery homes. he was a conservationist. He gave much more than he took.

If you enjoy your time here, particularly the fish you catch, you owe a little "thank you" to the memory of George. That, however, is not what he was after. What he wanted was for you to enjoy your stay here, and to "leave a few for the next person." He thrived on helping others -- in gymnastics, in horology, in enjoying the mountains, especially fishing.
