FYI. Eight cameras are being installed around downtown and Beltown Seattle in a pilot program, they will issue tickets to drivers who use transit lanes or block intersections.
Here is the announcement from SDOT: https://sdotblog.seattle.gov/2021/11/15/dont-block-the-box-traffic-cameras/
Here is an example of behavior that will be ticketed automatically every time:
Here are the location of the 8 cameras:
Again, this is a pilot program, which means more are likely in the future.
As a cyclist and a pedestrian, as well as a driver, I think the one on Westlake is going to save lives. Drivers will hit you going right on red of you try to use the crosswalk when it's your turn there.
I'm not posting this to stay an argument, I'm posting because the info is relevant to many in here.

Mercer might actually be driveable if people entering from side streets are no longer able to gridlock the intersections anymore!
EDIT: Nevermind, your map doesn't show Mercer being included
EDIT2: It once took me 53 minutes to get to I5 from Elliott via Mercer. That's 1.9 miles.

Good. I cross that Westlake and Valley intersection twice a day on my bike and I've had many close calls with drivers turning left onto Valley from Westlake and right from Valley to Westlake.

I don't drive in Seattle, but even commuting home from Redmond to Kirkland I occasionally find myself going through a green light behind other moving vehicles (actually traffic speed, btw, not slowing), only for them to stop (rather than slowing down then stopping) and end up stopping part way through the intersection.
It's gotten to the point that I hesitate before crossing a cross street, just in case.
Funny, not so funny story from years ago when I went to something down at the Center. I was on Mercer a few blocks or so west of Queen Anne, and I must have sat through 4 or 5 green lights before moving, because when I got the green light, the left/right turners onto Mercer had backed up to the cross walk and I would have been blocking the intersection for the entire green light cycle. I have never been so honked at by drivers behind me who wanted me to proceed and block the intersection.

I'm all for safe streets and love automated traffic cameras (this sounds sarcastic but I am 100% serious, I'd prefer not to have thousands of people die on our streets every year), but does this belong in Trail Talk?

I do belive it does because many take to the urban locales in the winter to get big hikes in. Several known routes through downtown.

Good to know, I will continue to avoid Seattle like the plague.

I appreciate the concern for things being where they belong so it's easy for people to find.
My thinking in posting this here was: (1) a lot of people who either live or work near the area and run or ride bikes there, (2) some of these intersections actually have trails through them, and (3) this is info people should be aware of because it will affect many in here who regularly drive through downtown. It isn't a Stewardship thread, or a trip report; there's no perfect home for this.

Sorry, over the last two years we've learned that people don't avoid the plague, so this phrase needs to be retired.

Seems to me the "Full Moon Saloon" is a good fit.
It's funny that drivers need citation issuing robots to motivate them to not drive in a selfish, inconsiderate manner, but here we are.
Redmond installed "Red Light" cameras several years ago to automatically issue citations for running red lights. A colleague, originally from the UK organized an petition against it and inundated the city council with opposition and Redmond ended the program.

Let's start a new thread, a poll maybe, to discuss what forum this thread should be in.
Automated tickets are easy to get out of in Washington, just sign the form that says you weren't driving. (In my case it was true; I don't advocate lying.)

In Snohomish county, call Rick Merrill, he has been getting speeding tickets dismissed at a very high success rate for many years now. My son paid him $100 about 12 years ago to get his thrown out, last I checked his rate is $200 and you don't have to go to court.

I used to live in Eastlake and use my bike to get groceries in Queen Anne. So many close calls at this one intersection. It's a shame this is necessary, but it is.
