First use of snowshoes for the season. The fresh deep snow made for very strenuous snowshoeing up the steep forested slopes. Views from Point 5159 are spectacular with Cle Elum Lake below.
We stopped at Point 5159. Even that took six hours car to car.
Cold up high when the sun was behind the clouds.
Very fun report! I remember following (roughly) your route when you posted the TR to Not So Sasse from the same trailhead. We had a great outing thanks to you. This is also going on my list now. Based on the slope shade map the route looks relatively avy-safe. Would you assess it that way in general? Obviously, it's dependent on snow conditions.
Most all of the route is in heavily forested slopes. One could skip the final 100 feet of the "knife edge" to summit of 5159 if avalanche forecast is high. When the snow becomes more consolidated the effort will be less and the route can continue to Howson Peak. Enjoy!
Funny, I was out yesterday for the first time in a long time trying to find my climbing legs again. I was thinking of what I wanted to do when I found them again. My first choice was a repeat of your route. I fell a little short on my attempt many years ago and alway wanted to go back.
