We (my good friend Jack has some fantastic pics as well) parked at the Bear/Pinnacle trailhead, hiked up to Pinnacle Lake, and followed the gully from there.

I've never done the route the OP did. Have done it several times from Pilchuck, following a ridge. Fun route, a bit sporty in a few places.

No report of loud music playing from boom boxes yet, so that's a good thing. I sure hope the eye of FB doesn't focus on this area.

Nothing worse than idiots blasting their music while on the trail. I'm all for hiking your own hike and all, but if you want to hear music put in earbuds.

This was my route. When I zoom in, it looks like there's a Pilchuck Trail, which you could leave and make your way to the lakes. It might be easier than the route I followed. Is this the one you took? I might go back some day and try it.
We left the trail at Pinnacle and found our way. Sadly, once you get to the top of the gully, the route is marked with yellow spray paint on boulders. One of them says "IODINE GULCH" with an arrow, the others are blazes.

The "helpful" yellow paint has been there at least 20 yrs. I'm guessing some intrepid scout master brought his minions up there once upon a time to help conquer the wild. It's pretty idiotic because you can't really get lost on the ridge. Same thing near Lake Byrne/Little Siberia.
I'm surprised by the amount of snow still hanging in there.

Cyclopath makes a good trail model.
But his girlfriend doesn't want him attracting too much attention.
I don't see it happening. He's just too good out there.
See what I mean?
And some lake... doh, where are the other prints.. oh well. enjoy.

Approaching 50 years now. You're close on the origin - a couple of Explorer Scouts that were in SAR at the time thought they were doing the world a favor.

I can't seem to find the trail you are referring to when I zoom in, but that probably is what I've done. It's fairly well established in some places, others not so much. Also includes some helpful yellow paint splotches, as does Pilchuck itself.

I've seen paint splotches at other lookout sites, like Crater and McGregor. I thought they were from the lookout days, but perhaps not.
