NWS Seattle Discussion this morning:
Quote: | Rain spreading over the entire area Wednesday morning. Models
still having trouble with the intensity of the front Wednesday.
ECMWF still stronger than the GFS taking a weakening 1000 mb low
over the north end of Vancouver Island midday. The GFS has the
surface low near Haida Gwaii at the same time. Ensemble solutions
off the ECMWF have the mean max gusts near 40 mph in Seattle, mid
40s in Bellingham and lower 50s mph at Forks. Not very May like.
The GFS ensemble means are in the 20 to 30 mph range. Operational
MM5 a little stronger than the GFS ensemble mean. Forecast right
now leaning toward the stronger solutions. It`s certainly
possible we will need wind advisories for the North Coast and the
Northwest Interior Wednesday. In addition to the surface winds
good orographics will produce significant precipitation in the
mountains. Snow levels at this time look to be in the 4000-4500
foot range. 12 to 18 inches of new snow possible at Mount Baker
and at Paradise on Mount Rainier by the end of the day Wednesday.
Strong convergence zone over Snohomish county Wednesday night
behind the front. Highs in the lower to mid 50s. |
We haven't had a May like this since at least 2011 and maybe much longer......

The weather this month makes it feel like October or November weather, just with more daylight.

12" to 18" of snow on Mt Baker and Rainier? Must be due to Global Warming.

Cliff Mass yesterday: Quote: | A Record-Breaking Spring
As I will detail in a future blog, we are on track to "enjoy" the coolest spring in a half-century. Right now, the average April/May high temperature at SeaTac is the second-lowest in the past 50 years (see below). And there are a lot of cold temperatures ahead. |
Apparently Yakima is having it's coldest spring by far

Two things…..
one:
NOAA Spokane has posted that the average day that Spokane hits 70F is April 17, a temp they still have not reached this year. Record ‘late’ date for reaching 70 is 1896: May 21. It doesn’t look like Spokane will see 70 anytime in the next week or more.
two:
I have been checking Harts Pass snotel every few days….
Snow depth has been pretty steady for the past few weeks at about 100”. It is 95” today.
When I checked 2 days ago the water amount had increased 4” in the previous week and now shows a whopping 57” of water! That is 149% of the 30 year average.
I hope we don’t get one of those zoom up to 95 degrees spring days….

I'm thinking you'll probably be seeing a lot of melting if it gets hot and there's still the BRUTAL SNOW DEPTHS. such depths cause major waters!!!!

Sorry, if the idea of it being an extremely unusual May weatherwise - like record setting - flew right over your head.
