You can reconfigure your device to encode the photos as JPEG instead of HEIC. Or automatically convert them when transferring them to a computer. See here: https://www.imore.com/how-take-jpeg-pictures-ios-11-instead-heif If they're already transferred to your computer, you can use an online converter. However, you should assume they will retain any and all photos you upload to the site. And doing so probably gives them explicit permissions to reuse them. https://heictojpg.com/ There's also desktop software you can install to do the same thing. https://imazing.com/heic Or imagemagick if you're a nerd... https://imagemagick.org/index.php

Easiest way is to open them in Preview on the Mac and just Export them as JPG. Requires no external software to do this.

OK, good news! I think I have this working for HEIC and HEIF files. Thanks for highlighting the issue, I had no idea Apple defaulted users to a proprietary format that isn't supported by any major browser (even safari), but was relatively easy to patch thanks to this utility. Uploads for these file types will be slower since the browser converts them to JPEG before uploading, but probably still faster than you having to manually convert! The sample files provided by the developer seem to have uploaded just fine. Some of them are animated but we only convert the first frame. These are animated (uploaded first frame only). We could put something in to convert animated to GIF instead of JPEG, but we really don't want to encourage uploading large animations and video is probably a better format anyway... Edit: Upon closer inspection the conversion to JPEG shifted the colors a little. That said it's no worse than using this online utility: https://heictojpg.com/ - if anything we do a slightly better job. You may want to experiment converting to JPEG manually on an apple device and see if that's any better than what we are doing in browser. I don't have an apple device so can't test with the sample files.
