It was eighty years ago today that Fred Beckey and his brother Helmy amazed everyone with their ascent of Waddington. Here is Fred’s write up. http://publications.americanalpineclub.org/articles/12194302900/Climbing-and-Skiing-in-the-Waddington-Area?fbclid=IwAR1W7mrauPWdxM4Dt9nijytkQ0A0YpRl7OLfFvFFHPnBejl4AUg1aZhefYI

Fred was 19 I believe and Helmy was 17. No helicopters, InReaches and no contact as far as I know while they were there. They were dropped off on the beach or maybe up the river a little ways. Absolutely amazing adventure. Link to Fred’s account in 1942 Mountaineers Annual. Scroll to page 17. https://www.mountaineers.org/about/history/the-mountaineer-annuals/indexes-annuals-maps/the-mountaineer-1942

Thanks for posting about this anniversary. It's amazing the hardships and discomforts they endured, no help from their crude and heavy gear. Partial ascent in "sneakers and felt pullovers", indeed. Plus the lengthy bushwacking with huge packs, in pouring rain the whole time. Fred obviously had an uncommon single-mindedness from an early age that never waivered. This is a good opportunity to bump up a mention of John Clarke's feats in the BC coast range. I greatly enjoyed his biography that Cascadetraverser mentioned here. More recent Clarke info/media here for those who missed it.
