Not sure it's the same one, but there has been a cougar out there in the past that has taken a dog. Rumi

My boy is a very athletic dog with a strong prey drive, and he had absolutely no chance. My second 60 lb Aussie remained at a safe distance and made no attempt to help.

WDFW puts our monthly wolf reports. Last month biologists investigated a wolf mortality on a collared wolf. Final determination? It was killed by a cougar "Dominion pack WDFW Biologists collared an adult female wolf in this territory. WDFW Biologists also investigated a wolf mortality in this territory. A juvenile wolf that was collared as a suspected member of the Smackout Pack in September of 2023 had left that territory and had been traveling with another adult collared wolf in the Dominion pack territory during the late fall and early winter. Collar data suggests that these animals were still traveling together when the pup was killed on January 10th or 11th. Sign at the scene and the disposition of the carcass indicated that this wolf was likely killed by a cougar" "Pup"? This wolf was nearly 8 to 9 months old and adult size. 60 - 80lbs I'm sure

Wasps. eek.gif But that wasn't what I was going to say. RL, I would be interested in knowing more about this encounter if you are willing to share. Do you think the cougar knew there was a human nearby? How big was the cat compared to the dog?

Sure, I just want to limit my exposure to the Monday morning lion tamers. 😉 I'll stick with my gut call that this was a 90 lb cougar based on being visually about 1.5x the size of my dog. My dog is pretty fluffy, so maybe I am underestimating. Given the proximity of the cast of characters, the cougar likely was aware the makeup of our party. Milking me for the juicy details would require a juicy beer and a verbal forum where I can curse, gesticulate and grandstand freely.

I'm also curious how you got your dog out of the situation safely.

No, but the beer rule applies double for journos, and I want Jason Momoa to play me in the movie.

He was the happiest boy at the doggie ER and came in prancing to the surprise of the staff. He is getting extra cheese rations with his antibiotics.

I was the friend along. I have spent alot, alot nights and days in the Cascades and Olympics and never seen the like of what happened Tuesday. I used to go out solo and always carried an ice axe while hiking, just cause (not sure it would have saved me) and always kept my kids in sight on backpacking trips in the past, just in case this could happen (not sure that would have helped either). Glad I did though... Routeloser was epic in the save of that cool dog!

I'm so humble that I need to hear you beg for it. And I haven't gotten my beer yet. Mano a Gato
