Watching this week's eclipse online brought it all back for me,
The last couple days I couldn't stop watching videos of it. Crowd reactions are so great to listen to. You can hear people try to talk through tears, people screaming and shouting...that might sound annoying but it's crazy what kind of spontaneous stuff we all said. One of my friends was at Sugarloaf, on top of the mountain; I looked at videos from there and there were some terrific crowd reactions. Sugarloaf eclipse

Here's an image from the International Space Station that shows the umbra making its way across the U.S. So this is what we were looking at from below. Interesting... ~z
Here's another: Edit: Sorry this second image is considered to be fake. So I am removing it. =

That second shot is amazing (if real, which I’m quite skeptical about)!

That's quite a bazooka, GW! biggrin.gif What's the focal length? Great photos!

I followed a similar strategy when I went to see the 2017 eclipse - drove to the WA/OR border, turned in early at a WA state park campground, then rose before dawn to head to a good viewing area right on the bulls-eye of totality, Ankeny Nature Preserve. It was totally worth it. The return traffic was horrific. I set up camp again as soon as I got into WA and set off for home around 3 am, before the morning commute.

No problem. My initial reaction was also "wow", quickly followed by hang on a minute! The angles were all wrong, as if the camera was in the shadow and not outside it (and I wasn't even sure if the shadow was real!), and the moon looked pretty similar to the shots we get from the surface of the Earth, so it must have been added into the image. doh.gif

It's a 400mm lens. (I have a 1.5x extender for it too, but decided not to use it.) I've got the hood pulled out, to make sure that the solar-filter didn't touch the glass, which makes it look a little bit bigger.

Yes, after you and philfort spoke up I could see that the angle was wrong too. ~z
