Well in spite of the negative reports concerning Sunday Lake, I couldnt convince my friend to change his mind. I rarely turn down an offer to go fishing in the mountains so I went along. It wasn't anything like I was expecting. The trail was very easy, but unmaintained. We didnt see anybody else up there. The Sunday Creek crossing was nothing, the creek is almost non-existent right now. All the fish are confined to the couple of suitable pools that remain. They took flys willingly. These fish were very interesting- Although not big, (6"-10") they had brilliant orange lateral stripes with thick spotting and red throat slashes. From what I could tell they were a rainbow-westslope cutthroat hybrid. I wish I would have had a camera.
Once to the lake, after a quick lunch break, I worked my way through the brush out to a penninsula and started casting a spinner. First cast I got slammed hard and after a surprisingly good fight, I pulled up a nice 13" cutt. I continued to catch fish for a couple of hours on various flys and spinners from 5" bows up to about a 15" cutt that I lost. Oh well. There was a nice breeze at the lake to keep the bugs away and a great view of surrounding peaks. (If you could call them that at 4000') I also saw two bald eagles and an osprey. All in all a good day. It was about 7 miles round-trip.
Brian- Thanks for that correction. I guess I haven't really studied my fish I.D. pictures enough... Oh well. I can always rely on the experts to catch the mistakes. lol
