My hiking partner and I are converting to hammocks for the summer, so we'll see how it goes. (and I have another older TarpTent Squall, v.1 as well)

yeah, when you put it that way they do seem expensive, but you are basically paying for the labor involved with custom sticthing it to meet the needs of a light weight backpacker. I bought one off this board last summer and love it. VERY light weight and goes up easily. i could probably build my own with that silnylon or whatever material it is that is used, but after the hours it would take to build.... plus the extra materials that i'd have to purchase, and getting the poles, mosquito netting, etc, i'm sure they are worth the money. there is light-weight tents that cost far more and do very little more in service.
