Since I got my SporTrak Pro GPS a while ago, I've been trying to think of ways to protect the screen from the inevitable scrapes, scratches and such that always occur.
If only there was some kind of clear plastic self-adhesive overlay, sort of like what I have on my Palm Pilot... oh! Wait a sec! Yes! A few snips with the scissors and... a perfect fit!
I use the Fellowes WriteRight screen overlays on my Palm and it makes a world of difference in Graffiti recognition and viewability. Does the same thing for the GPS unit (without the handwriting recognition, of course).
Anyways, just wanted to pass on my sudden flash of brilliance.

That's a good solution, but rather spendy.

Of course the best way to keep your GPS screen looking pristine is to leave it at home in its case. That's where mine lives.
But, if I ever were to want to use the infernal thing, I'd go to any better motorcycle shop, and ask them for a sheet of the clear plastic stuff they sell to MC racers to put over top of their racing number plates. They will sell you a piece of heavyweight clear contact paper, a little bigger than 8 x 10" and it will run 5-10$. The stuff is bomber, and it's crystal clear. It's 3M I think, or maybe a Scotch product. If I had a Palm I would use it for that too.
Call first though, because not every shop will carry this stuff. If I was looking for some I'd probably try Bellevue Suzuki/Ducati, Lynnwood Cycle Barn, Seattle Cycle Center, or University Honda.

I put my GPS in a heavy duty plastic baggie. A box of 25 costs about $2.

What is the adhesion like that that stuff, though? If you were to remove it from the display, would it delaminate the screen?

I buy them by the dozen for my Palm, so one or two a year for the GPS (not scratching it up with a stylus) isn't a big impact.
I like Tom's idea of a baggie, tho...

Now that I think of it they do sell some 4 mil clear plastic sheeting that does have some electro-static properties down at McLendon's for about $4/ft2. I guess I'll have to go and see if it works.
Currently I throw mine into two freezer ziploc bags after the screen started getting scratched up on our SW vacation.

The plasting sheeting proably wouldn't delam the screen but the electrostatic solution sounds even better.

I bought a neoprene case for my Etrex from REI . It has a clear vinyl window which protects the screen.
I'd never be without my GPS when I'm winter camping...don't use it much in the summer except in the car to find remote trailheads.
