How would I go about compressing an image to the required size for an avatar?

Open the file with Windows "Paint". Click "resize" at top. You may have to play around with it to get it to fit. Be sure to save a copy of the original image file prior to fiddling around with it.

From your settings - "Displays a small graphic image below your details in posts. Only one image can be displayed at a time, its width can be no greater than 150 pixels, the height no greater than 150 pixels, and the file size no more than 16 KB."

This assumes the person is running Windows. Some us choose not too. I recall making mine. Height and width were easy enough. File size took some work as I recall. I'd resize and check the file size. Not small enough. Downgrade the quality or dpi. Check file size again. Have Photoshop and another darn good shareware application. Could use Lightroom if I wanted but more familiar with Photoshop at this point. Now also have Windows 10 on the other half of the partitioned hard drive but only so I can run GIS. Was "forced" to use Windows when I had a paying job. Now I get to do what I want when I want to and the way I want to.

Avatar Post Test. I have had a hard time getting photos into a format where I can use them as avatars. I was unable to shrink photos taken with my Canon DSLR to the 16K size limit for avatars on NWHikers.net. What I finally figured out is that my camera is taking images in 24 bit color. To work on this site photos should be in 8-bit color. What I did was use Microsoft Photo Viewer to down size the image I wanted to use to 70 x 70 pixels. I then pasted the resulting image into Microsoft Word. In Microsoft Word I right clicked on the image and selected "save image as". The image saved from Microsoft Word was now small enough to meet the 16 K file size limit. Microsoft Word automatically converts color depth from whatever to 8-bit, reducing file size. I hope this helps if you've been having similar issues. BurnsideBob

I'd be a great climber if I wasn't afraid of heights.

How much effort is required for you to figure out that the MacOs equivalent is "Paintbrush" and for Linux it is "mtPaint" ?
