First time visiting the islands of Maui and Lanai. I was fortunate to have a clear day to drive up Haleakala after the flash floods when I first arrived in Lahaina. This is P2k #350 for me. Turns out Magnetic Peak has a better view into the crater than Red Hill and Pakaoao is also a nice vantage.

For Lanaihale I started at the cemetery and hiked connector roads to reach the Munro Trail which traverses most of the crater rim ridge crest. In past years it was legal to drive ATV’s to the summit of the island, but that is no longer possible. The hike itself was still muddy despite a few days without rain. I slipped many times and was fortunate to not fall down.

Ho'okio Ridge
The old road goes within a few feet of the summit, which is covered with dense foliage. I made a slight variation on the way down to go more directly towards Lanai City. This other trail passed over a saddle and dumped out at the golf course. Roughly 12.5 miles and 2k accumulative gain in just under 4 hours.
