Wait, which one is the real thing? No doubt, Hendrix owns this, even though Dylan penned it and does a damn fine, albeit lesser heard version. By the way, U2 does a rockin' job also.
Next up, Supremes and Vanilla Fudge in a virtual tie, depending on your frame of mind. I just have to add a shorter version that qualifies for best lip-synch performance.
Marvin Gaye left us a sacred classic. Unashamedly, a Hall and Oates freak, I think they do it justice in this rarely heard performance.

"These are the places you will find me hiding'...These are the places I will always go." (Down in the Valley by The Head and The Heart) "Sometimes you're happy. Sometimes you cry. Half of me is ocean. Half of me is sky." (Thanks, Tom Petty)

However many remakes you know about, there are probably at least twice that many. I'm still continuously amazed to find out versions of songs I'm very familiar with aren't the original. Generally speaking I'm a fan of making a song your own. If you're gonna cover something, try to do it a little different. Some remakes are so faithful to the original you can barely tell the difference between the two. Which begs the question of why bother remaking it at all.

But then sometimes imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. And what with you tube now pretty much anybody can record a song in their own home and post it to the internet, so the whole concept of cover songs has changed somewhat.

OlderthanIusedtobe, I somehow knew you would be in. tongue.gif For the safety of all, only posting the original songwriter here.

Walk Off The Earth has a few originals, but they mostly do covers. I do prefer their versions to some of the originals. They have dozens, here's a few.

A big jump from one genre to another can give a song a whole different complexion. Warning: the first video is from early in Lady Gaga's career when she was being really weird just to shock people. It's bizarre.

See this is exactly what I mean. I've only ever heard the Eagles version. I know a handful of Jackson Browne's songs, but I had no idea about this one. doh.gif

Italian metal band Lacuna Coil has a few surprising remakes.
