My bike ride today brought me past a church. I noticed they were using cloudberries as a ground cover. It is native to Scandinavia as well as northern states like Alaska, Maine, and Minnesota. I was able to pick enough to make a pie. A Google search showed someone had seen them on Mt Pilchuck. I am wondering if the person might have mistaken salmonberry for cloudberry. Has anyone in this forum ever seen cloudberries in Washington state? Where? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubus_chamaemorus

I have not. I sent an inquiry to a personal friend who used to live in Alaska. The Wikipedia page says their native habitat range extends to 78° N Will let you know what I find out.

Thank you. The person who wrote the article said he saw the cloudberries at 5,000 ft on Mt Pilchuck. Here is the article. https://farmflavor.com/alaska/alaska-crops-livestock/what-are-cloudberries/

Sounds really familiar but I can’t remember actually seeing them. Looks like they probably grow around Fairbanks area.
(* I am assuming the second sentence is the response to the information in the Wikipedia article. *)
If I were to find some, I'm sure I could make jam from them too! up.gif

I have seen them in many places around Redmond and Kirkland used as ground cover in landscaping. It is not hard to imagine that any non native plant used in landscaping can also spread occasionally to trails.
