So, the Mariners were playing great in spite of Despotoa and are challenging for a division title - so what does what's his name do? He trades their only reliable relief pitcher. You have to think this team only cares about keeping the payroll down and could give a rip about a winning team. As in the past twenty years, management gives no reason for people to want to pay to watch. Maybe Despotnik wants to be dumped?

it was quite the head scratcher. But he was not the only reliable relief pitcher, the bullpen had been doing pretty good, they actually included the most inconsistent arm in the deal, Montero...and Toro did hit a 2 run hr in the 9th. I was hoping they would stay pat and let the process play out. Now they may have messed up their chemistry...which was quite interesting.

Since I have no expectations of forgiveness, I don't do it in the first place. That loop hole needs to be closed to everyone.

Some teams care more about winning than making a profit (Yankees-big market teams) others care more about their bottom line than winning. Really, despite the drawbacks, IMO MLB should have a salary cap.

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.

Graveman is 30 yo and free agent after the season. Castillo is 3 years younger, has 3 more years under contract and does great at advance metrics. Bullpen improved. Seager is getting old and expensive. Toro will fill in nicely at 3b next year and provide 7position b/u insurance while we wait for Seager to age out. Also under contract for 3 more years. It's not just about this year, but following years, too. Players like Ty France and Lois Torrens don't just come out of nowhere. Jerry finds them and trades for them. It's a process. I finally think it's starting to come together. 2023 will be the year when it all gels. Playoffs! Trust in Jerry!

But that would hurt the 2 biggest money makers for MLB. a quote about the latest transactions being made by those two big spenders: "...will add nearly $17 million in prorated salary and puts the Dodgers' payroll at about $285 million, roughly $85 million more than that of the second-place New York Yankees"

Clearly you aren't really even paying attention to the team then, because Sewald and Steckenrider have been as good as, if not better than Graveman. Santiago, Swanson, and Chargois have also performed very, very well. The Mariners don't have the best bullpen (no hyperbole) in the majors just because of Graveman. The trade was a head scratcher at first, but in hindsight it looks great with Castillo now in the fold to take Graveman's place. Toro has a higher floor than Shenton and is 2 years ahead in development at basically the same age, Castillo is here for another 4 years and has a better long term record than Graveman (who will almost certainly regress). In summary, Jerry knows more than you do. He's built us one of the best minor league systems in baseball, and it's starting to pay dividends. Let him do his job. smile.gif

The Minnesota Twins also have one of the best minor league systems in baseball…but a lot of good it has done them. As soon as they become really good players and their rookie contracts expire…poof, they are off to a big market team via free agency. But at least the Twins have won a World Series, that’s more than the Mariners have done.

Sure, and Houston, Tampa, Boston, LAD also have been top 5 farm systems over the past 20 years at some point or another, and they've all made multiple appearances in the World Series in that time frame. Cherry picking and pointing at one team that hit a rough patch does not make for a good comparison. I get that hearing "just be patient and let the process work" sounds like crying wolf considering the long, long history of failure that the Mariners have endured, but this is also the first time since the 1999-2003 (Gillick) run that someone even halfway competent has been running the team, and he's working to recover it from a period of historically, unfathomably bad mismanagement. And so far, all signs suggest he's doing just that. Be patient with it, or don't. But trading away all the talent that has been amassed in this rebuild process in the hopes of maybe, absolute best case scenario getting a Wild Card birth this year which will undoubtedly result in a first round exit against the more competent teams in the league...will just set the process back another 5+ years and compound the problem further.

The M’s surely knew about pending 80 games suspension. Was that hole on their mind?

I still say that if the mariners had somehow came to terms with Randy Johnson they would have likely won at least one, maybe two World Series: a one two punch of two high quality starting pitchers usually gets it done, without those, very difficult to win it all.

Two mediocre closers in a row and bingo, turn a good team to a losing one. This team has a fragile structure - they are not really that good but have been playing really well. Despotnik has basically set up a situation where mostly mediocre athletes will no longer have the edge they have had. Swanson is a run of the mill pitcher whose pitches are straight as an arrow; good batting practice pitcher. Despotnik has to go!
