Amazing TR. Sorry to hear about the leans mishap but phenomenal, just phenomenal! This one really seems to encapsulate the endless supply of jagged peaks dripped in glacial ice.

This one rocks my world! Wow, just wow!

Thanks Tom. If I was to lose any of my Canon L lenses, it was the 24-70mm f/4L lens. I'd mistakenly taken it, instead of my 17-40mm f/4L, and had roundly cursed it earlier in the trip, when I could have done with the extra field of view. Obviously, it hurts to lose an expensive piece of glass, but it was my least favorite lens. Regarding the sea of glaciated peaks, I'd often ask for the name of some peak or the other that I found interesting, only to get the answer that it's only a 6,000m peak, and we don't name peaks below 7,000m! huh.gif

Indeed, although if I'd picked up every rock to examine I would have got nowhere. lol.gif Thankfully, I'm no geologist. biggrin.gif I trust you know about the dangerous high altitude gemstone mining that occurs around the Skardu area?
I am a mineral collector as much as I am a hiker/climber now. The minerals of Pakistan are world-class and I would have probably gone at some point just 'for the rocks'. World-class minerals + world class mountains is a win win. What's more, is I am currently working on a humanitarian engineering project for water treatment in Pakistan. I will graduate from school in April and sometime after that hopefully I will get to go to Pakistan and see it all!

GW: i really appreciated this TR. world class and for sure you could spin this off as a coffee table hiking book (with a slightly different narrative). for your lenses: you should look into insurance for those. i recall that i paid something like $8/yr (??) for insurance on a body + lens ~ $1000. given the terrain you travel, that's peace of mind.

Congratulations on reaching your goal GaliWalker, and thanks for sharing these journeys with us. Who could imagine that such places existed without seeing them? What a great planet.

What memories this brings back - I did this route, including Gondogoro, in 1994. We had actually planned to spend the night on the pass, but the other paying tourists had bad headaches and insisted on going down. But that was very different on our July trip. The descent on the southern side was sunny and mostly snow-free, but had some challenging water crossings.

Wow! Thanks for those photos! That looks so different in the bright sunshine, and in the middle of the day. I guess in those days there wasn’t as much danger from rockfall, as there is now.

I don't remember rockfall issues, though there were no other groups besides us crossing the pass. Most trekkers returned down the Baltoro in those days, crossing that pass was rare. I do remember those narrow icy runouts that you talked about, scared the compost out of me. But what I remember most is what you said at the beginning of your post. There simply is no more spectacular mountain scenery than the Karakorum - that is if spires and steep rock is how you define spectacular. The snow and ice giants of Nepal are amazing, but this trip stood out. I always thought of going back to do Snow Lake, but never did return.
