In my current situation of being in a wheelchair I have given some thought to this:
Would you rather lose your legs and feet or would you rather lose your arms and hands?
or another way of looking at it:
Are your arms/hands or your legs/feet more important?

That's a very scary thought. My mother is going into surgery tommorow morning and is having a partial amputation of her left leg due to her advanced diabetes. Having seen her go through so much pain and infections in her legs I can say I'd (not that I'd like to see his happen!!) prefer my hands/arms to stay intact. Your arms can become very strong-almost overcoming the loss of your legs. God knows I would hope I never have to make this choice!

I'd opt for keeping the feet (assuming I could still hike). Of course, it would be a challenge to put on clothes, set up camp, take pictures, etc. with my toes but rumor has it "some guys bring their own females with them"

I would rather break both of my arms and every rib, than break my talus again.
There is a reason they refer to the talus as "the worst bone in your body to break".

Breaking and loosing aren't the same.
Seeing various types of wheelchair bound people trying to get in and out of the bus, and move around the city in general - I'd say I'd rather lose my legs. With arms and no legs you can still easily write, pull the bus cord, type, signal, pet your cats, cook for and feed yourself, clap at your kid's role in the Christmas pageant, or flip them off when they bug you, if you wanted to do so (my scenario assumes you get to keep your fingers).
With legs and no arms, well - seeing what I see on the bus, getting by looks alot more difficult; not to undermine the legless people.

I have come to the conclusion that I would rather have my arms than my legs.
I could give up my climbing and hiking. I don't think I would ever want to give up a hug to my children, family, or friends.

I'd much rather lose my hands. I can't imagine not being able to walk and run.

I saw a film in the early 80's about a lady who had no arms. It was mind boggling what she had learned to do with her feet. For example, she could hold a knife with one foot and chop carrots. She could answer the telephone. She could use here feet almost like others use their arms. Did anyone else see this movie and know what the name is?

Hmm, don't recall that one but Joni comes to mind. She had a movie that was released in 1979.

Mmm . . . ribs . . . You're making me hungry for BBQ Backpacker Joe
As much as I'd miss hiking, I'd rather lose my legs.

Legs here too. As much as I'd miss the places I would no longer be able to go, there are too many parts of every day life that would be infinitely more difficult without arms.
