Didn't the US army resort to Agent Orange to deal with brush in Vietnam? I think a chain saw seems like a better tool for getting through North Cascades slide alder.

Agent Orange would work but is too slow and that mushroom growing out of your forehead obscures vision. If you ever tried using a chainsaw on brush you know it is hazardous and impractical. This thing weighs about 3lbs and would do the job on slide alder and vine maple. Getting the platoon of Marines to proceed your trip is the hard part.

What does that mean “came in possession of”? Did you find it at Warshalls?

A gift from a friend who was moving to Japan and had a number of prohibited items.

Aha a Khukuri I saw a couple locals having a fight with them in a Nepali village, pretty scary. They are a bit lighter as this is nearly 3 lbs. They were given to Marine medics in WWII.

What a coincidence, I have that exact same USMC blade, I found it at a Goodwill In Sacramento in the Mid 80's, but don't have the sheath. Mine has dark stains maybe blood? As to Cascade brush, when we were bush bashing trying to get to the HooDoo mine, I grabbed onto a small Deciduous tree and was poked by about a 1/2 long thorn anyone know which type of tree that is? Seems like a small cordless chainsaw with rechargeable batteries would work well.

It could be Hawthorn there is a lot in the East but I do not know about here. It has long thorns coming out from branches that can draw blood.

Well, they were long and wicked sharp. It was my first encounter with such a tree in that area. When I grabbed onto it to pull myself through the mangrove going up the hill, I assumed it was slide alder. That hill heading up to the right of the gulch was the thickest brush I have ever encountered, you had to almost literally throw yourself through it.

We had a machete along years ago on a trip to Agnes Peak. There was horrible brush as everyone up that way runs into. We tried hacking at alder with the machete for about 5 minutes before realizing we were expending more energy doing that than struggling to push through it. It's not like hacking through the jungle in the movies.

We remember balancing on 2” limbs of slide alder coming out of Access Creek 4’ above the ground. It would not be fun to slip.
