Yesterday, I went out for another work party with WTA. We worked the first mile or so of the Lost Creek Ridge trail, preparing it for a series of work parties that will replace ailing puncheon bridges and removing some blow down. We worked on the entrance to the trail and there are more work parties today and tomorrow to spiff up this great trail. After work, we all moved up to the Harold Engles grove. If you have not been there, you should go prepared for an almost religious experience. Harold Engles saved this grove of trees from being cut and the cedars and other trees there are magnificent. I felt as though I was in a cathedral and it was awe inspiring and belittling. I encourage you to visit and walk the 1/2 mile loop there. up.gif up.gif up.gif cool.gif up.gif I am not posting my pictures as they do not do justice to the moving experience of being there and cannot capture the immensity of ancient trees.

Thank you for your work up there! I look forward to heading that way this season and will definitely have to check out the grove. Can't wait.

I've driven past the grove many times but only stopped there for the first time this year. Great spot. Was up there again during the heat wave and there is a beautiful spot down by the river where it's possible to get in.

Beardo....we walked down there and disassembled a fire pit that some jackass had made and got rid of the pile of wood someone intended to burn at some future point. Not the place for a campfire in a hallowed place! shakehead.gif

That is too bad! It must have been new since I don’t remember seeing it

Harol Engles roamed all over the Glacier Peak area with no waist-belt on his extremely heavy pack.

Did you manage to clear out this one?

No...we only worked the first 3/4 mile of the trail and did not go up the switchbacks. But, there's more work parties out there and perhaps they'll clear the pile.... cool.gif

Exactly how I felt on a summer morning in the Roosevelt Grove over on the Idaho border.

Several years ago my daughter and I rounded a corner up past the falls and came face to face with a huge bull moose. I yelled really loud and he was quickly out of there. The Roosevelt grove is pretty cool, but the Engles grove has much bigger trees, some twisted into interesting shapes. The river spot is pretty cool too.

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.

That is really a very generous thing you are doing Bob. I've only hiked there 3 times over the years. Most recently about five years ago I went out pretty far on a day hike. The trail at that time was in good shape; that snarl of trees looks pretty nasty. Where is the Harold Engles Grove?

gb....the Engles grove is about 3 miles up road 49. North Fork Sauk off the Mountain loop highway about 17 miles south of Darrington. It's well worth the drive.... cool.gif p.s...as for generosity....I really enjoy working trail and the feeling I get when I compare what we've done with how it was at the beginnings of the work party is well worth the effort. Come out with WTA and you'll see what I mean. It's a blast. up.gif

I simply stumbled into the Engles grove with my wife and kids, when we were just looking for a quiet spot to explore toward the river along that road (we were car-camped nearby at Bedal). We were all enthralled by the trees and the memorial sign. Such a neat, random discovery.
