Hello, I'm in the market for some lightweight merino wool hiking socks. For years I had several pairs of lightweight (thin) Smartwool boot socks but they've become worn out. I just had my old Asolo boots resoled at Dave Page's and they're just a tiny bit tighter on my feet than they used to be, and they were always snug. I just looked at Amazon and there are a BEWILDERING number of hiking socks available these days. It's confusing. I'm just looking for an inexpensive pair of lightweight merino wool/blend socks that won't take up too much volume in my boot. Any suggestions? Thanks, Cliff

Honestly there are so many and most of them are great, as is the nature of merino wool. I would shop around if you have the patience and look for a sale.

Darn Tough makes pretty durable socks in different weights and they are on sale at REI a couple times per year. Costco socks are not a durable but dirt cheap.

The thinnest socks are sold as “Sock Liners”. I use the Injinji liners, with regular darn toughs over.

End of story, really. Not cheap initially, but they have a lifetime guarantee--you return the worn out socks and they credit you. I bought several pair years ago and just keep returning them, although they last about 5x longer than Smartwool so this happens infrequently. Return a bunch at once to reduce shipping costs. At the end of the day not only are they virtually free, but also the longest lasting, best feeling, and best looking socks you can find.

Darn Tough. End of story. They guarantee socks for life. Seriously. Okay. one pair of my sock wore out. I returned them. I got a coupon amount for the same socks from Darn Tough on their website. No payment was made by me.
