After two hundred feet of vertical I was accosted by a swift moving Hello Kitty helium balloon as it rode a stiff breeze through the forest. The whole scene has to rank in the top three strangest things I have ever seen.

On most off trail hikes I end up stumbling upon a balloon or two. I've found a few that were muddy and full of water that were annoying to pack out. Four big heart balloons was probably my biggest find.

Location, location, location ...
When I primarily hiked in the Cascades, especially in Alpine Lakes and Glacier Peak regions, I would see them a lot. That was due to prevailing winds in relation to major population centers. Now that I primarily hike in the Olympics I see them much less often.
Like the OP, I hate 'em and wish helium balloons would disappear from the marketplace. I would like to see them banned, but how are kids (and adults) going to know it is a special day without them? It is fun sounding like Donald Duck after inhaling the gas, though.

Saw two new Mylar ones drifting E from a birthday party at Cheney Stadium this eve. Wondered where they’ll settle.
BTW Sacramento beat Tacoma 12-11. It was way uglier than even score suggests.

I saw a couple taking wedding photos with a bunch of helium balloons near Paradise yesterday... hope they didn't end up letting go of them...

A few months in Connecticut I found a balloon while my brother was showing me a mountain bike trail in Guilford.
Whenever I see them they go straight into the pocket. (Here I did a quick tick check first)
Do parents make the connection? What goes up, must come down?!
Kids, just say no to balloons!
Maybe we all save these balloons and present them to someone who cares, make art or make a statement about choices we make?

Found this note attached to a balloon on Mt. Price. Was anyone in this forum at this party? The phone number is no longer good so it has been blocked.

Yawn.. I care much less about balloons that make their way from a child's hand in Seattle to the mountains, than I do the hikers who litter up in the wilderness: plastic bottles, wrappers, etc. esp on busy trails on popular day hikes.
