The surface smoke forecast for this weekend is looking very bad, and is much worse than the sky smoke forecast . It doesn't appear that there are any obvious areas on the west side to escape from the smoke this weekend.
Is anyone planning on backpacking this weekend? I know I should probably cancel my plans but I am feeling stubborn.
Surface smoke forecasts:
Saturday, 10am Saturday, 7pm Sunday, 5am

These are generated from Opensummit. Good callout, these maps are not very useful without the scale:
My experience has been something like: purple/light yellow = hazy distant views, yellow/orange = hazy closer views, red or worse = little views

In case comparing webcam shots to the surface smoke forecasts is helpful:
Crystal
Opensummit current surface smoke forecast: purple at Crystal, yellow/orange over Rainier
Opensummit current sky smoke forecast: purple
Newhalem
Opensummit current surface smoke forecast: red
Opensummit current sky smoke forecast: yellow

Sadly, it looks like (the remains of) this historic structure on Diamond Peak in Pend Oreille County has been burned according to the outlines on The Diamond Watch Fire. This is one of 93 standing lookouts in the state. I enjoyed visiting it last fall.

Just saw where High Valley, a suburb of Packwood, is being evacuated along with the other area--Goat Rocks and Timberline. There is a development called Goat Rocks.
Hwy 12 is closed, and Packwood is at Level 2 evacuation.
Maybe some huckleberry habitat is in the making.
What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

Very smoky in the Enchantment Lakes today as in eye watering. Stopped by lower Snow Lake on my way down from Temple Lake and got this shot

A new one on the Wenatchee.
NEW FIRE 🔥
There is a new fire, named Minnow Ridge Fire, burning on the Wenatchee River Ranger District approximately 14 miles north of Plain, WA. The fire was spotted by Sugarloaf Lookout at 3 p.m. this afternoon and is located in steep, remote, and inaccessible terrain near Chikamin Ridge and crews are currently evaluating suppression options. The fire is around 50+ acres. The White River and Irving Peak fires are located about 12 miles southwest of this new fire. We are in the process of closing trails in the vicinity of the fire and alerting hikers that may already be in the area.

So tomorrow is a somewhat dangerous fire day. MBS national forest, according to their website, is still allowing campfires? At least i can see no mention of campfires being banned.
I dont get it. Doesnt seem logical.

The smoke has not in general been as bad as was initially forecast apparently because the fires have not been burning that hot. The area of the most fires in Washington in the North Cascades has had the least amount of east wind which is fortuitous. Crystal and Rainier on the otherhand have had strong east winds. Yesterday evening's satellite kind of showed that effect with the Packwood fire putting out almost as much smoke as the combined much larger North Cascade fires. The mountain webcams do show unpleasantly smoky skies pretty much universally this morning. It would appear that the smoke will only gradually disappear over the next couple of days as the diffuse smoke is offshore of the Washington Coast.

Saw plenty of people selling firewood on the way up the Mountain Loop yesterday.
Update: looks like Highway 2 is now closed...
