08/17/22 - 08/22/22 This report precedes my previous report posted earlier today. Wednesday I was up and packed early and left at 9:00 am. I got almost to Montesano when I remembered I'd forgotten something. I considered my options, and turned around and drove back home to retrieve the forgotten items. At noon, after putting another $30 bucks worth of gas in the truck, headed out again, only to be stopped just shy of Elma because of a multi-vehicle accident that had traffic backed up for miles. It wouldn't have been nearly as much fun if it hadn't been 90° F out there on the highway. I gave a couple bottles of water to the guys in the big black truck right behind me. They enjoyed it.

After no less than eight hours, finally arrived at destination to find that it was suffering from some serious neglect; temperatures were in the 90s and nothing had been watered for days. I spent the next several hours watering plants. The plants were happy. Thursday I spent the first part of the day watering and tending plants again. Gardens don't do well on their own. Gardens seem to do much better with a bit of human intervention. I also intervened on some windows that were in need of cleaning.

I was up fairly early on Friday. Timestamp on the breakfast photo is 08:03 PDT.
Saturday I got up and had a little breakfast about 10:00 am, right after I put the pies in the oven.

One of the pies went to my host, another up to Birdie at Kalaloch, and the other I brought to the potluck being held to meet the new Sheriff's deputy. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Cliff Hay, a local resident who was first introduced to the Queets by my father in the 1950s.

After sampling the many delights prepared by local wives, none of which are ordinarily on my menu, and none of which I know how to cook myself - things like potato salad, mac salad, burgers, bratwurst, and beans - I headed north to look at some of my favorite trees. This is the part where I should have posted this trip report before the one I posted earlier today There's the link so you can do a side-by-side visual comparison. I was a bit more than dismayed to find that the Cedar Grove Trail had been plundered by shake bolt pirates, who scattered bits and pieces of tree in all directions. What a mess!

By now you're wondering "Where's the trip in this trip report?" As things turned out, the weather along the coast went from blazing hot to crappy cool and cloudy almost overnight, and I got seriously sidetracked tending all the gardens and doing some clean-up work that really needed doing. I was finally able to get down to the beach on Sunday, my last full day, where I had a nice lunch on the beach up near Steamboat Creek.

A great week. Very peaceful. Did a fair amount of walking, even with the amount of time spent working.

Whaddya think Ski, do I still have time to get out across the Queets in the next week or three (before the fall rains hit)? Your photos make it look awfully inviting.

river's down to 400 cfs right now 09/15/22 20:45 PDT means just more than ankle deep at Sams if you find the right spot. my nephew went up there in late July and got across when it was running at about 1400 -- all a matter of finding a spot. (he had a 6-year old kid with him as I recall... I gave him directions to an alternate campsite opportunity only a couple miles up the trail because he didn't think the kid could go very far.) local accuweather forecast right now doesn't show any big rain within the next three weeks. (the fishermen up there are getting antsy about that.) I'd say go for it. Best time to go up there. Nights are longer and cooler. Bugs are GONE. Colors are out in force. Downside: really really really easy to lose the trail in the meadows above Tshletshy because of all the maple leaves on the ground. When you get to any clearing - if you don't know the way - stop and get your bearings. Only real trouble I ran into on that was just below Bob Creek. Sam sent me a note and said the trail was in shabby condition, but he went up there a few weeks before Ernie had a chance to get up there. (I didn't cross the river this last trip so I can't say.) Be back up there in a few weeks. wink.gif
