But you could just agree a second "starting trip" message meant that.
You could use starting and ending trip messages to spell out where you buried the treasure using binary code! People really don't like spending boat loads on technology that has artificial limits preventing it from technologying. InReach is capable of doing this, it just won't, at least not for you; customers don't like that. Moreover, a lot of potential customers are unaware of this change, which is why I started this thread. Anybody in the market for an inReach now needs to be aware of this downgrade and make their decision to spend the money or not with this knowledge.

Custom preset messages are definitely cutting into their revenue. I can also see how custom preset messages lead to confusion around what messages count. To confuse the issue further, you can set custom "preset" messages in the Earthmate app, but those are sent as regular messages...

Garmin is refunding customers including the full subscription price. They're always had excellent customer service.

Meh. I'm grandfathered in, but I never actually use the preset messages. It's so cheap to send a custom text. You already get 10 free texts per month, and after that it's super cheap to send messages ($0.50 each).

Well I guess at the end of the day, not giving any explanation says everything.

Custom pre-set messages mostly eliminated the need for full messaging for me by using these three. 1) checking in and on schedule - all ok 2) delayed but ok 3) Need non emergency help from family or friends at this location or at trailhead if I can make it there. Come prepared for flat tire, locked out, stuck in sand/snow, dead battery, tree across road, non life threatening medical issue, etc....

I'm curious where you heard this. This sounds pretty exciting.

The newest iPhone can trigger an SOS via satellite when there is no reception. From anywhere in US and Canada. It will probably take a couple generations of refining to really compete with an inReach. https://backpackinglight.com/apple-iphone-14-vs-garmin-inreach/

Better than nothing but I can't see it being a viable replacement for an inreach or proven satellite device any time soon. I guess we will see...

It's not available yet, supposedly by the end of this month. I hope there's a way to test it, otherwise I don't think I would trust it over the garmin.

Thanks for the important correction on timing! smile.gif It sounds like a good start, but not a real alternative at this point. DCRainmaker did a review comparing the iPhone and inReach and listed the differences, if anybody wants all the details. In a few years it will hopefully be very refined.
