Doing Ice Lakes this weekend, wondering if there is any urgent information that might make or break a trip. What's the bear population like up around there? Are bear cans going to be necessary for a 1 night trip? Going to be fly-fishing as well... any info there would also be appreciated. Last thing - are there good campsites at the upper lake? Thanks in advance.

The upper lake has pumice flats for tenting. Do whatever is needed to protect the bears: food lines with the skill to properly set them, or canisters.

If it's not closed due to the nearby fires, it will be VERY VERY smokey. There are fish, but only small ones, and not a ton.

It isn’t closed (yet) but smoke may be an issue depending on wind as there are fires close by. I saw a report of someone heading up Carne recently, looked smoky. I recommend checking this site https://www.windfinder.com It has proved helpful to me on getting an idea which way the wind will be blowing smoke the past few weeks. Kinda looks like it’s playing ping pong in the ice lakes area this weekend.

Didn't see any bears when I was there two years ago but I did see cougar tracks at the lake and the largest pile of cat scat I've ever seen at 8700 on Maude.

Ok thanks. What’s the road like? We are taking an Audi Q5. Is that high enough clearance for the road?

Audi should be fine. Some friends were up there a couple days ago, smoke was fine.
