What does happen if you’re camped at a spot you don’t have a permit for?
Like let’s say you’re benighted and opt for an empty camp site since you didn’t make your target site…
If it's a quota area in ONP they can make you move. I know they do the same in MRNP. I witnessed a ranger force some guys to move in Seven Lakes Basin so that those with permits could camp there. It was after sunset. I know some friends that mistakenly camped in the wrong area in MRNP and the ranger forced them to move.
In most non-quota areas, there really isn't much of an issue because people can disperse camp. The issue there is to get far off the trail. As long as you have a permit and are not crowding other people, the rangers won't bother you.
