Managed to avoid smoke originally we were going to check out Snow Lake but forgot pass. So headed over to Tenneriff TH. Went up trail to Si cutoff to Haystack basin. Then down New Si trail to Talus loop and back to Tenneriff Trail. 10.5 mi 3200' elevation. Been since forever to go this way. Saw about 3 people.

Trap Pass before the Murphy Lakes fire blew up. On October 4th we saw no smoke coming from the Murphy Lakes area.

Ran the "Sawtooth Lakes Loop" or some variation of it and hit Switchback and Martin yesterday. Almost decided not to go because of how bad the smoke was getting on Friday but SpookyKite89 convinced me that there were good odds the Sawtooth Wilderness would clean up over night. And they were right! Had clean and crisp air all day. Such a beautiful area, can't believe I waited so long to visit. Even managed to meet up with Mosey at Upper Eagle!

My "are the masses gone yet?" fall hike at Paradise (yes, except for the first quarter mile, in the afternoon). Color is at peak.
Boy, even from the parking lot area...the reds are nuts.

Mount Catherine - 10/16/2022 Never seen enough reason to travel this far for a 3 mile hike before but time was limited and smoke cleared at elevation so this fit the bill. Lots of reports about how bad the road is but I thought it was OK. Some big ruts to avoid but no major obstacles. I would not drive a low clearance vehicle up there but I bet somebody could if they really wanted to.

Hiked to Goat lake (MLH) wasn’t all that smoky especially in the forested areas. Very few people, trail in great shape. A few fish rising, one strike while rafting and trolling a fly. 10 easy miles RT and I am pretty tired. Elliot creek was running strong still, thanks to the Sloan snow fields.

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.

Larched around for a few days last weekend. Met up at upper eagle lakes with refreshments for the last leg of zimmertr's golden lakes slam. Last year I hit heather pass peak and came down to FS pounding stakes, taking down the trail sign, and telling me not to walk on the trail to it rolleyes.gif but from there I saw the sinusoidal ridge of crooked bum and thought "gee that looks like fun" and surely enough it was when I came back for it. Very intuitive, a few steep spots, one krummholz that had to be pushed through to get out of a steep talus strip with cliffs ten feet below, but overall mellow enough. The prominence gave as grand a view of the striking peaks in the area as I imagined, despite the top being as round as... well, a bum. Larch zenith seemed really short this year, and most of the colors on the usually colorful big leaf maple section of the drive were just brown and dying. Still, a beautiful area that I somehow had never worked up the initiative to drive out to but I guess it's worth sucking up my hatred of long drives for. The town of mostly tourist hikers was fun to chat up, too.

Escaped Snoqualmie's rain to the dry side. Stumbled across the Umtanun Creek Trail. Had a great day! https://www.flickr.com/photos/44468754@N04/albums/72177720303211095/with/52458511245/

Went out to look for some dry weather yesterday and ended up near Blewett Pass. Hikes of Tiptop and some peaks on Tronsen Ridge accessed from high on Ruby Ck (7204) Rd and Five Mile Rd. Five Mile Rd is rough and getting brushy.

West Tiger 3-2-1 loop on Monday. About 6" of snow on top, with knee deep drifts in places.

10/11/22 - Nason Ridge My wife and I spent the weekend at Lake Wenatchee so we went up Nason Ridge. Somebody left a snowshoe path up the first 1/2 mile or so (thanks). After that we were left breaking trail following deer prints (nobody had walked it since the foot or so of snowfall a week prior) Parked at the summer trailhead and hiked about 4.5 miles up the trail (less than a mile beyond the huge Ponderosa Pine) Next day our daughter arrived and we went up the same trail (long story) but this time there had a been a couple other parties since us so the trail was fairly broken in.
Anybody know why there was so much smoke in the valley 10/10?
