photo of a black bear in sleeping in its den yesterday, wondering what's in front of its nose?

No kidding! This is a high quality photo. As an aside I always imagined bear dens as deeper. Poor thing must have an awfully cold snout mid-January

Outstanding!! Great shot. Thanks for sharing BTW...the bear could just be napping at the den entrance. Den could be very spacious and deeper inside. BW up.gif up.gif up.gif

the den is much deeper, she/he can turn around inside, someone of fb said that it might just be a regurgitation?

They could be false truffles.
This study reports on Page 277 that false truffles are a dominant food for black bear in September and October. https://www.academia.edu/18015886/Dietary_adjustability_of_grizzly_bears_and_American_black_bears_in_Yellowstone_National_Park

I'm gonna say pretzels, stolen from a pic-a-nic basket.

Looks cozy. That looks like a last minute snack right in front of it.

Blacktail Plateau Drive is a 1 way, 6 mile dirt road. The end of that road is just west of that bear den. We had a really cool wolf howling experience at that junction at dusk about 3 weeks ago. Den was occupied

Experience is what'cha get, when you get what'cha don't want

First though was, yea it looks like poop, but more likely regurgitation, unless another bear or animal pooped on his doorstep, although he might have dropped it off in his way into the den, I doubt he would back up and do it, lol... maybe marking his territory? humpy.gif

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.
