More Adventures in Paradise (47° N 124° W) 10/12/22 - 10/17/22 .... picking up where we left off in our last episode... Wednesday I arrived later than I had originally planned and had just enough time to put some dinner together.

Thursday morning I had a little breakfast to start the day before my adventures.

Every time I drive over the Hwy 101 bridge at Queets I slow down and look upstream and downstream to see how high the water is. This is what it looks like when it's running at 344 cfs at low tide. I've never seen this much gravel bar on the downstream side. The guys in that boat said they weren't having any luck at all. Considering how low the water was, I'm surprised they even bothered.

In my last report, I noted that there was a five-yard pile of crushed rock on the side of the road at the Cedar Grove Trail. The rock was used to construct a fancy-schmantzy little footbridge over the roadside ditch and resurface the entire length of the trail. They also cut a couple short dead-end spurs leading off the trail. One leads off into the northwest part of the grove, the other two appear to be pads for porta-potties. (If they are not going to install porta-potties those two spots will become toilet paper blossom gardens in short order.)

After visiting the cedars, I headed south to one of my favorite beaches.

After such a fabulous day, it was only fitting that I fix up a fabulous dinner.

After packing up all the garbage out of that campsite, I wandered around a bit more and was rewarded for my efforts.

I ventured farther north in search of more edible treasures, but found few. I did find quite a bit of evidence that not all of the Olympic Peninsula is used just for tree farms. I really have to question those who think Olympic National Park and Olympic National Forest are in need of expansion when so many other efforts are being made by different organizations. I think maybe some people just need to get out more.

Some of these units are immediately adjacent to commercial timber lands. Hard to tell one from the other without the signs.

Sunday looked to be a fabulous day when I got up and had some breakfast.
breakfast 10/16/22

I had my lunch all packed, my boots laced up, and my pocket knife all ready for an all-day-long mushroom hunt when I went out and got into the truck to head out. When I hit the key, the starter solenoid shorted out, causing the starter motor to run continuously but not engaging the Bendix drive into the ring gear. The starter, pulling all 675 cold cranking amps out of that brand-new battery I just had installed, sounded like it was going to explode. I didn't have my stopwatch running, but I'm estimating it took me no more than 70 or 80 seconds to break out my tool kit, find a 13mm open end, get the hood opened, and get the battery disconnected. I considered my options at this point, and decided the best option was hope I could get it push-started and limp it home. I packed up everything, cleaned up my "campsite", and discovered that I am simply too old to try to push start my own truck. I wandered over next door, where a party of elk hunters was camped. Two very friendly, very large and burly guys - Brian and Chase - were kind enough to come over and give it a push. It fired right up and I got home a few hours later. Took me two hours to R&R the starter Tuesday, but that was only because three-fourths of that time was spent walking back and forth between the truck and the garage, fetching the tool I'd forgotten on the previous trip.

cornichons. somewhere in between sweet and sour. they served them on board the cruise ship with the gravlox and I kind of acquired an affinity for them - they help with that yin-yang-sweet-sour-hot-cold thing. ref:
