I just returned after a wondrous travel through Yosemite and the eastern Sierra, Bears Ears and Canyonlands, and the Grand Canyon. What marvels there are in the world.

I was hoping to do one last hike in the mid-Atlantic, in which I could find some fall colors. Unfortunately, due to the low cloud deck every viewpoint was a bust. It also started raining right after I took these pics below (in the first mile), which, combined with the strong gusty wind, meant that my hike was basically a photography-free conditioner.

New Mexico on my mind today, as I re-work a few of my favorite shots from a trip to White Sands NP last December. The first image is from my last evening there, when I went for a hike through dunes that had been wiped of footprints by a wind storm earlier that day. If you are there during a wind event, I strongly recommend getting out there after the slate has been wiped clean - it definitely gave me one of those timeless hiking experiences. Oh, and I suggest using your favorite GPS app to mark where your car is! I was quite happy I'd done so when it was time to wander back so I could get out before the rangers closed the gate for the evening.

I took this a few hours ago. I know the Cedar Waxwing isn’t a particularly rare bird, but this was only the third time I'd seen it, and the first time that I also had my camera with me. I think this is a gorgeous bird, so I was a bit disappointed that I couldn't get a totally clear shot before it flew off.

I will be eyeing the opportunities for getting some dynamic weather along the WA and OR coasts as well as the potential for skiing in the mountains. I love hiking and photographing along the Pacific in wintry weather. This is from an early spring trip to OR this year - along the shore on the south side of Cape Perpetua where there are some really nice surge channels like this. It's a fun state park for moderate hiking and shooting.

They are wonderfully decorous birds. I see them on occasion at Magnuson Park in Seattle, but not in such a nice setting.

Went to Twanoh State Park today to take some Twanoh Creek pictures and discovered that salmon were heading up stream. Salmon had made it about a quarter of a mile upstream from the canal to where water wasn’t deep enough to swim.
