Eric Johnson who posted in this forum with the screen name of “cartman” has died. Eric and I climbed a number of peaks together and he undoubtedly shared mountains with others in this forum. At some yet to be determined date/time in the future a celebration of life will be held at the Mountaineers. Eric had ongoing health issues that ended his life much too soon.

This is terrible news.😕 Eric and I backpacked/peak bagged in the Glacier peak wilderness sometime ago, after I posted a partners wanted post here. He was a good guy and really loved the outdoors. R.I.P Friend

Sorry to hear that. I did three trips with him after meeting him on NWHikers 9 years ago. We visited Star Peak and vicinity, Garibaldi Park, and Ice Lakes. He really did enjoy being out in the mountains.

Sorry for the confusion. The Celebration of Life has yet to be set up but will be at the Mountaineers Hall located at Magnuson Park.

RIP, Eric cartman. frown.gif We had numerous memorable trips together. Though we hadn't been in touch in some years, I thought of him often.

RIP Cartman. I enjoyed your posts. Thank you Mike for sharing this sad news. It’s not good when someone disappears with no explanation. This forum has been around long enough, we can’t help but see signs of how short our lives are. Live well all.

Damn. I didn't know Eric well, but had been on more than a handful of trips with him over the years. His love of the mountains was apparent.

This is really awful news. Eric and I did quite a few Mountaineer scramble trips back in the 1990s. I had no idea he was Cartman until we did an NWHikers group trip together. He was always fun to be with on a trip.

I last ran into Eric on Jan 9 this year, an unseasonably sunny and warm day, much like today--we were both on a bike ride and crossed paths near Discovery Park. He had just experienced some rapid weight loss but was in good spirits, doing everything he could for his health. He was not one to give up easily. Like many of you, I met him through this site. We've done a number of hikes together, and I'd consider him the one most responsible for introducing me to the concept of peakbagging. His knowledge of the Cascades was unbelievable; he seemed to have a near-photographic memory for mountain topography. And for history--name any peak on his list and he could tell you when he did it, with whom, and even what the weather was like. A meticulous planner and record keeper, I often turned to him for advice on routes, and ideas for solo outings. It's rare these days to run across an old register or look through peakbagger ascents and not see his name. I believe he was about 7 away from completing the Bulgers. But the illness really took a toll on him these past few years and he had to pare down ambitions. Anything would do though, as long as he was out in the mountains he loved. I will miss his unique personality, encyclopedic knowledge, impeccable spelling, and positive attitude.
