Ran across a pano of Payto Lake when reviewing our Canadian Rockies photos. I had seen a lot of fantastic photos over the years taken from this overlook and always wanted to see it myself but each trip the lookout it was closed for construction. This year it was open so I finally got to see it. I'm not sure if it was my overblown expectations, the fact that we got to see Moraine and Louise lakes from high altitude (for comparison), or the masses of people we had to pass to get there but I was disappointed. Don't get me wrong - the scene is stunning (and we saw it on a bright clear day), it just didn't make the highlight reel for me.

Except for reflections I don't usually care for photos that center the horizon but this one really works for me.

Those labels look like Peakfinder labels.
1. Are they from WEB based Peakfinder?
2. Did you find an easy way to align them with the photo?
I know the peakfinder app has some nice features for alignment but I am too cheap to buy that but I have aligned peakfinder output with photos before and it took a good amount of work.

Hi Bowregard,

Well, no . . . I do look at WEB based Peakfinder and use it some, but find that the drawing isn't always that precise (detailed features are sort of rounded over), and many peaks (especially minor ones known by local names) are not included.
Many peaks are obvious and well known, and easily identified. For the other, not so well known peaks, I try to use several sources to verify their identity. Google Earth and Fatmap are helpful because even though the rendered shapes aren't very accurate, the satellite pictures draped over the contours give a lot of visual clues (like the shapes of meadows and treelines). CalTopo and Peakbagger are very helpful because they have tons of peak names - especially unofficial, locally known ones. Additionally, they have several base map layers that are very helpful for locating features. CalTopo has a line tool that I use to draw sort of sight lines - that I use a lot. SummitPost often has photographs that are very useful for comparing views.

Well, no . . . I use the photoshop shape and line tools to make the dots and lines, then use the text tool to do the names. Manual labor i suppose, but it goes pretty quickly for me now that I am old enough to not be able to move so quickly . . .
Hope that helps!

Stiletto Lake Larches
I almost didn't make this photo. The tree trunk extends beyond the top of the frame and probably breaks a half-dozen rules of composition. But the more I looked, the more I realized that regardless of the lake, rocks, larches, and the mountains, the tree itself was what grabbed my attention. The patterns in the weather-worn bark, the gnarly knots, and the crusty root ball looked more like a painting to me than a photo. And being the lone tree at that depth of field focused my eyes in that direction.
I don't know, maybe it was just my woodworking eye that found the tree to be interesting. Thoughts?

That foreground tree certainly grabs your attention but I'd agree, it is intriguing.
Here's a summit pano from Roosevelt.

Wow! I've seen photos of Snow Lake, Chair Peak, Chair Peak Lake, Kaleetan, Kaleetan Lake, and even photos taken from Roosevelt before. But I have never seen them from that angle. It adds an element of depth to those features not seen from photos taken from the Melakwa, Snow Lake, or even the Kaleetan sides. I love it. I posted a panorama at the top of page 58 in this thread from Kaleetan that makes Chair Peak and Chair Peak Lake look almost pastoral by comparison. Thanks for posting this.
To be perfectly honest I think the inclusion of Kaleetan Lake detracts from the effect but I understand the desire to include it in a panoramas thread.

That's an amazing pano awilsondc! I almost forgot that I had added Roosevelt to my to-do list before the season started and had forgot about it, but boy is that view unforgettable. Sometimes I take for granted how beautiful the immediate Snoqualmie Pass area is in the summer given how many other amazing places are also accessible.
