Today went up Nook trail to West Tiger RR Grade then Seattle view to Summit of WT2. Tedius post holing once we hit clear-cut unit. Nice View

Ironically the snow and post holing is probably easier than it was this summer when I took the Seattle View Trail and had to contend with half a mile of 2-3' deep brush from the cut.

Yeah that was the idea we had before going up bit snow was deep but unconsolidated on pick up stick branches.

I headed up the Change Creek Trail today for a snowshoe with two others. We thought about maybe doing the Change Creek / Hall Creek loop, but the endless small branches to get around and step over really slowed us down. Also, none of us had been on the Hall Creek Trail before, so we weren't sure what we might be in for.
We ended up making it to J's Landing for lunch and then came back down the same way. No big logs or major obstacles. On the way up, we used spikes until the boot track ran out at the Hall Creek Falls viewpoint. There we switched to snowshoes for the remainder of the day, including the descent back to the PtoC. The snow softened up a lot during the day so we could flatten down the boot prints on our way back.
We'll have to go back on a day with more sun - only a few views today.

Nice inversion layer at stevens pass the last few days. Feels really spoiled to be in the future where you can just click into a webcam to double check cloud heights.
Bonus bear prints from the snow last week

Silo Mtn (aka Big Haystack). Long road starting down low near The Skagit River outside of Sedro-Woolley. This section has been sold to Hampton Family Forests. Rec permit for non-motorized use required for $75.00 per year for access to a huge tract of land. Gate was open when I got there and when I left but I biked and hiked/snowshoed the road. Nice, firm snow and a snowmobile track made for easy walking. 16 miles RT and 4k gain.

Lake Serene and Bonus Tarn - 12.17.22
My hiking partner and I headed up to Lake Serene hoping to catch a break in the weather for some views. No dice on the vistas, but we did have an awesome day!
Typical trail enroute to the lake. Nice ‘n’ packed microspikin’ heaven.
Never gets old!
After we reached the lake we decided we wanted to explore the ridge up towards Philadelphia. We backtracked to the sign junction, put snowshoes on and headed up. The snow was absolutely atrocious. After traveling a measly quarter mile in 30 minutes we rerouted to the tarn on the ridge. Once we were under the trees the cross country travel was pleasant!
Bonus tarn!
We had a long lunch at the tarn before retracing our steps back to the lake and heading home. We only saw 6 people all day!

Serene is probably my favorite shoulder season hike. I love going there in spring to scratch that alpine itch as I come out of hibernation.

1/1/23 Winter walk in the Puget Sound lowlands. Mt Cavanaugh. The gate was still open from hunting season but we came for the hike. A group of 6 or 7 residents from the nearby Lake Cavanaugh started at the same time. Clouds opened and the summit had nice sunshine. 5.4 miles RT and 1067' gain.

Went up Old Si Trail today and was pleasantly surprised. Only a few blowdown all easily passes. No snow until just before second intersection with New Trail then traction helpful but not manditory. Sunny at start windy and snowing on top. Fun

Bike ride to Olo Mtn and Blue Mtn up the logging road next to The Masonic Family Park on The Mtn Loop outside of Granite Falls. Land is now owned by Hampton Family Forests. Carried snowshoes on my back for the 3000' ascent to Olo and never used them. Roads were snow-free to 3250' and then I walked the last couple hundred feet on a firm crust to the top.
Dropped back down to the saddle between Olo and Blue Mtn where I stashed the snowshoes in the bushes and rode/pushed the 1000' up to the summit of Blue. Neat views out to the Puget Sound. 25 miles and 4000' of gain. All windows intact after the trip.
