This should probably be on the lazy thread, but I'm too lazy.:-) We had a fun day. It was kinda hard (lots of fresh snow!). There's a fine track in you have a notion. Peace, B

If you head up from 42 and use the old trail it is easy squeeze up to Defiance if you do not creamed by an avy. As in many things timing is vital.

You are correct, that is the route of choice. BTW, there is a ton of blowdown on the exit 42 connecter trail along the edges of the new clearcut. The boulder field below Mason Lake was filled in enough for careful passage, and the boulders on the lower section of the Defiance's SE Ridge (aka the winter route) are nearly completely cover too. :-)
