Happened early Christmas morning. Some neighborhoods lost power. KOMO story: https://komonews.com/news/local/tacoma-public-utilities-pierce-county-sheriff-department-deputies-substation-vandalism-burglary-power-outage-restore-police-report Edit: I added the location of the 4th substation that was attacked.

Time for more infrastructure security surveillance! shakehead.gif It's a further sad commentary on the state of our society that some people would (on a holiday, no less) engage in this kind of destructiveness and cause so much misery for their community and headaches for first responders, et al. I have to say, 2022 checked a lot of boxes in my "losing faith in humanity" scorecard. frown.gif Maybe we need a thread in the Saloon listing good news reports.

The 3 substations attacked all appear to be the smallest size - i.e. neighborhood scale. In other words, likely minimal security.

Hard to catch. When they are caught I bet they’ll be shocked to find the U.S., not Pierce Co., prosecutor takes the case. I assume the U.S. criminal code takes a poor view of such activities.

Pyrites is correct. It is a federal crime and with stiff penalties. https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/1366 18 U.S. Code § 1366 - Destruction of an energy facility (a) Whoever knowingly and willfully damages or attempts or conspires to damage the property of an energy facility in an amount that in fact exceeds or would if the attempted offense had been completed, or if the object of the conspiracy had been achieved, have exceeded $100,000, or damages or attempts or conspires to damage the property of an energy facility in any amount and causes or attempts or conspires to cause a significant interruption or impairment of a function of an energy facility, shall be punishable by a fine under this title or imprisonment for not more than 20 years, or both. (b) Whoever knowingly and willfully damages or attempts to damage the property of an energy facility in an amount that in fact exceeds or would if the attempted offense had been completed have exceeded $5,000 shall be punishable by a fine under this title, or imprisonment for not more than five years, or both. (c) For purposes of this section, the term “energy facility” means a facility that is involved in the production, storage, transmission, or distribution of electricity, fuel, or another form or source of energy, or research, development, or demonstration facilities relating thereto, regardless of whether such facility is still under construction or is otherwise not functioning, except a facility subject to the jurisdiction, administration, or in the custody of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission or an interstate gas pipeline facility as defined in section 60101 of title 49. (d) Whoever is convicted of a violation of subsection (a) or (b) that has resulted in the death of any person shall be subject to imprisonment for any term of years or life.

Why ? Do the vandals get a percentage of generator sales or something? Was this a training exercise for a larger scale attack? Or was it just for the thrill of doing something that would makes the news.

It is the sort of self destructive actions which nearly destroyed the anti war movement in the late 60’s to early 70’s. Now apparently by a fringe on the other side of the spectrum. Could be agents provocateurs or not. Folks playing at being Turner or Che.

Security is a huge drain on our economy. People standing around watching stuff to make sure other people don't damage or steal it is a huge waste of time and resources to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars a year wasted.

North Carolina events were reported as sabotage while ours were described as burglary. Is it possible that this was just copper capers?

Actually, plenty was taken - from all those people who lost power, and the holiday time taken from the first responders who were on call.

The police are including in their investigation whether the attack on the power substations was in support of other criminal activity. -- either as a distraction or as a way of disabling security systems without power backup.

I meant copper or similar theft was not the goal.

Real life Grinches..

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.
