My fellow plant geeks may have noticed that the Burke Herbarium databases have been unavailable since late November. As a contributor to the Image Gallery, I just received notification that the Herbarium and other UW online resources were hacked with ransomware, resulting in loss of image metadata in the Image Gallery. Fortunately I have all my submittal records on my laptop and will be able to restore my work, but no doubt some files will be not recoverable. frown.gif The Burke Herbarium is currently estimating that the Image Gallery will be restored and online some time in April, hopefully in time for the majority of the spring wildflower season.

David Giblin says that the Image Gallery may not be up again until April and that the images can be reconstructed and have been downloaded in November, so all is not lost; though more recent metadata may be lost. But he also says he can probably reconstruct from his own e-mail records. I still have most all of my sent e-mails. I use the Consortium link when I find a new moss to find which Species of a Genus have been found in Washington. That makes it difficult, but records can be found at EfloraBC and through the Jepson Herbarium. Also, Discoverlife.

If you need help getting this back online I might be able to offer some or find volunteers with specific tech skills.

Volunteer IT help would no doubt be greatly appreciated. The Herbarium is the authoritative source for plant information, but lags behind other entities like inaturalist in terms of the ease of use of the website, which is too bad. I pm'ed you the e-mail address for David Giblin.

I got an out of office reply when I emailed David Giblin. Will try next week.
