Thanks for those old photos. Am I right in thinking based on your photos that the Carbon Glacier was advancing during this period? It would be fun if someone could post current photos for comparison.

Yes and no. Drift to AGW, models, predictions, public policy, etc. would be off limits but I don't see user contributed observations illustrating glacial retreat or advance to be all that contentious.

I can change that, and manage to find a way to blame our governor and dictator.

Not sure why you would want to. I'd think historical images / comparisons would be of interest no matter what your beliefs are. I suppose the topic could be contentious to any who don't believe glaciers have retreated, but I think the debate tends to be about the other stuff (causes, predictions, public policy, etc).

I don't have photos. But memories of walking in the Paradise Ice caves as a kid in the '60s vs doing a ski tour today and having to travel essentially to Cowlitz Gap before reaching the lowest extent of ice on the Paradise Glacier. The Paradise has retreated over 3/4 mile and 600 vft in the last 6 decades. In the valley below Cowlitz gap the ice used to be hundreds of feet thick and now there is no ice.

Article in today's Times citing Mauri's work and observations.
End of an epoch? King County may be down to its last glacier
Quote: | “Only Lynch Glacier remains an active glacier,” he said. “That one still has a chance to sustain itself for a time. It’s effectively the last functional glacier left in King County, flowing west toward Puget Sound.” |

I stumbled on this aerial shot by Long Beach Nguyen of the glacier on Bacon Peak above Green Lake and was shocked to see how much the glacier has receded in the last 10 years. There seems to be a bonafide lake up there now at the snout of the glacier. 15 years ago the glacier extended all the way down to the small lakelets above Bacon Laken.
Aug 2005
Here's a ground level view from 2012 where the snout was still not far from the lakelets.

On the upside I guess there's one more lake to savor now. I've always thought about where I might want my ashes spread and that particular spot ranks high on the list.
