They’re the unfortunate result of more than 2 million people a year plowing into deer with their sedans and SUVs, usually on a two-lane road, often at high speeds.
Not surprising, plus here in N Idaho there are also moose, elk and bear to contend with. I was driving my Dad's '66 VW bug down the road once going about 45 and a big black bear ran across the road in front of me, running full speed, it was gone before I even had a chance to react, dodged a bullet.
I learned a long time ago in rural areas on 2 lane roads to try to avoid driving about an hour before sunset and an hour after, plus in the morning deer are frequently traveling across the road to access water. The speed limit between Priest River and Priest lake is 60 mph, I try to go 50 or so...of course there is always someone wanting to go faster. Summer is really bad, if you go 60-62 you will get passed several times in the 35 mile stretch. Not sure why people are in such a hurry.
