The last sheep herd I saw was up in Meander Meadows back in the 60s. Does the Forest Service even allow grazing on National Forest land anymore? I haven't seen any down here in the Oregon Cascades.

Sheesh...quite a find that! Are you talking about the Clark Mt up the White River beyond Lake Wenatchee? I know there was a lot of sheep activity around there in the early 1900's.

A word of warning!! Removing any object over 50 years old from federal property is a no no. These objects are considered to be of historical significance and may lead to an archeological study.

It was up in camp, tucked under a tree. Either he left in a hurry , or forgot it.

The law doesn’t make a distinction between left and lost

The law might not but it that's what it says in the regulations.

Link? The regulations say that one can keep artifacts that were lost versus left.
How could one make the distinction?

Source?
Seems as it is indeed an artifact
“The following items may not be collected or removed by casual collectors:
Any part of a Vertebrate fossil (dinosaurs bones, fish, - anything with a backbone), and shark teeth.
Archeological resources including any material remains of prehistoric or historic human life or activities, which are at least 50 years old, and includes the physical site, location, or context in which they are found. (36 CFR 261.2)
The collection of projectile points, pottery, or any other archeological resource or artifact is not allowed (36 CFR 261.9 (h) without a permit. Projectile points include ‘arrowheads’ and any prehistoric human-modified stone.“

Hardly. I was clearing up the misinformation that there was a difference between lost and left.

The history of herding sheep in the Entiat is really cool! Too bad this thread has divulged into adults aggressively debating playground rules and "Finders Keepers Losers Weepers"
Even if this isn't legally an artifact, it clearly has historical and archaeological significance in the region.

The revolver is mediocre but holster is nice.
