Wow, the part where he felt the weight of the snow on his chest. I wonder if it helped him that the skis and pack were off at the time the avalanche occurred.

If the binding didn't release you'd think the avalanche might torque the skis and break his leg, or similar. I suspect there is an answer to that somewhere - a fair amount of skiers are caught in slides. Alpine bindings are not something I'm real knowledgable about.
