The carcass looks fresh, but how did the big bone get cleaned off so well? What do you think it was?

The kill was fresh. A day old. That's an old bone. I found the remains of 2 separate elk in the area. Looking @ the size of that elk femur bone, I'd guess a mature bull.

The lion came back to that kill the night before last. I put a trailcam on the cache yesterday afternoon. Hopefully there is enough meat left on the carcass that's worth the effort for it to return. Stay tuned

I decided to take a different path to that lion cache & check out some more territory. Nature hangs on. At first glance you'd think this fallen cedar tree was dead, or, should have died.
Bears are out
Still lots of snow patches scattered about and I cut some wolf tracks
When I arrive @ the lion cache I can see it had been disturbed again. Took a closer look. All that was left, was the stomach of that Mule Deer.
The rest of the carcass was gone. I searched the area for a bit and found these. Something had plucked the ears right off the head
I eventually found the remains

A wolf finds the lion cache but doesn't approach
The lion shows up 12 minutes after the wolf. Does not feed
The wolf returns about 2 hours later and still refuses to feed. The light on my camera was making both predators wary The wolf returns and decides to feed around 7:00 am

Wow! So amazing and well done! Was this filmed in Washington? The last Wolf capture had me running through the house with my laptop, tracking down my wife! The Cougar! Purely chilling. Fantastic! Thank you so much for sharing your work. B

Ok, Roslyn. A few years ago we came across wolf tracks on the on Iron's S-SW Ridge. They were mixed with deer and I believe Mountain Goats. That's when I discovered there was a Teanaway Pack. B

I stomp around in the Teanaway frequently. I'm getting to know it intimately This wolf is located outside of a established wolf pack territory There is alot going on with that wolf territory. Some would say it's good & some would say it's bad Anyway, there was still some meat left on that carcass, so, I re-cached it. Let see what happens

Returned to the new cache. Undisturbed. I try to take different routes just to investigate new landscape. I discovered this. The skull & some other bones about 10 feet away in a depression. Can't figure out what happened here. Where this cow elk actually laid down & died ( this looks staged, but it's not ) Hunters who can't follow a blood trail or who give up on finding a wounded animal, have no business hunting. This is frustrating!

GREAT VIDEO WORK! My winter goal is to refine my kit in the never ending pursuit of whatever "ultra light" means. Maybe I could claim to have finally come up with a definition that folks could consensify around? On a side note, does weight count if you carry it in your hand? How about pocket items ? Honestly, all kidding aside, I now figure everything worn, carried, dragged or teleported counts as weight. Oh yeah working on losing 12 pounds from my body.....

Rewind. I re-cached that cougar kill. I drug what remained of the carcass about 100 feet from the original kill site. I bound the Mule Deer's hooves to a tree making sure that whatever visited wouldn't / couldn't get snared in the small length of cord. It's a technique used to capture better footage. Vultures, ravens, coyotes & a bear visited. The wolf returned at night but never scavenged. It returned again 5 days ago. This solo wolf is hanging around outside of a established ( now vacant ) wolf pack territory and it'll be interesting & fun to document what happens next.
