Most of the time, I just think of graffiti as a defacement. But sometimes it seems like there's some kind of code, perhaps known only to other graffiti-ers, since there seems to be a kind of pattern. Such as this (written on a porta-potty):
I have no idea how to read this, although the last 2 characters look like "ee". But it does look like it's communicating something, right? Any ideas what??

All taggers have their own signature/symbols. Forget trying to penetrate the minds of defacement hooligans. huh.gif

I’ve seen similar tags in the UK - Scotland. Something like ALKIE or ALKEE, in a slightly more readable script., Maybe its a tagger who’s on the wagon?

whilst in the military I had to have a signature solely mine to initial messages. I developed a chop of the first letters of my full name, a more or less scramble of one on top of the other...that may be what some taggers do to identify their paintings.

Tagging is stupid but not so stupid as to use your real name.

Tagging as I understand it is a form of "magick". It's about power--a way for people to assert their sovereignty and independence from the dominant symbols and societal rules. Every gang, tribe and cult in history, some of which eventually grew into cultures, nations and civilizations, probably had "taggers" to assert their power in this way. And the weaker the dominant system gets, as in our time, the more prominent they become. It's telling that you see tagging all over our cities now, much more than years ago--a symptom of a falling civilization. So tagging is a little more interesting than just mindless hoodlums, imo.

That isn't really tagging. That's more like progressive-approved street art. Tagging is more primal than that; it's stone age symbols and codes; wild, tribal, outside the paradigm of technocratic activism or liberalism. It's not meant for the approval of your kind.

I like the graffiti on railroad cars, gives me something to look at while the train passes by...some of those "artists" are pretty damn talented.

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.

Is it like dogs peeing on a fire hydrant, to establish "their" territory?

Like I said, it's outside your paradigm. Might as well stay in your technocratic sandbox and let AI post meaningless gibberish for you.

Yes, partly that. Like I said, it's about power. Established authorities put up their signs and symbols to assert their power, other people put up theirs. It's actually a sign of cultural dynamism. In a truly totalitarian, demoralized culture, people wouldn't even bother. They would just passively accept Big Tech Brother's propaganda and wouldn't dare put out their own.

These days most graffiti is actually AI generated. They come thru at night with big computers! Specially made for generating the AI! Comes with an auto-spray setting.
