Florence Peak provided a solstice-appropriate hike from darkness into light, as the trail climbed upward in shadowed forests to Alki Crest, then begins to find sunlight along the ridge crest, and finally opens into sunny meadows at the top. Florence also fulfilled my Christmas wish to find bright frosted trees at the top. After a winter of warm days and bare trees, there had been just enough of a storm the previous days to flock the upper trees with fresh snow. There was very little snow on the trail, and less than a foot on top. I used crampons on the upper section mainly for easier walking, so my feet wouldn't slip on the thin icy snow on the trial. 8.9 miles, 3850 gain, round trip, with Stefan Feller and Eric Eames.
